Strobist info: 1 ChangYin CY-20 flash through snoot 1/1 power, behind translucent backdrop (opposite camera) For this week’s image I decided to experiment a little more with food coloring and water drop photography, but decided (as usual) to try something different. I had some green food color at home, so I wanted the whole shot to have that color. But then I noticed that my gel kit for my flash hadn’t arrived yet, and I didn’t have green (or any other) gels so I had to get creative. This is probably one of the most insane DIY hacks that I’ve done so far, but I decided to use a bottle of vinegar as a gel (yes, you read it right: a bottle of vinegar, because it has a nice and green bottle). I duct taped a snoot to one side of it and the flash to the other, than wrapped the rest of it into newspapers, so there wouldn’t be any light spill. I set up my usual studio, with a translucent backdrop, green paper on the table covered with glass. I got three wineglasses, filled them up with food coloring, set my camera on a tripod and placed the flash behind the backdrop. I started dripping some more colored water into the glasses and trying to press the shutter at the right time. I made three individual pictures of a drop falling into each glass and later combined the images with GIMP, so technically this picture is a three image composite.
