Profoto Rembrandt 2

“First, I positioned the subject approximately 2.5 meters from the backdrop to create sufficient depth, allowing me to treat the subject and background lighting independently. Given that I was shooting with a Phase One IQ4 medium format camera paired with a 110mm lens, the camera-to-subject distance was approximately 3 meters.

To sculpt the primary Rembrandt lighting, I selected a silver-interior beauty dish positioned to the subject’s right and slightly forward at a height of about three meters. A grid was attached to the beauty dish to prevent stray light from affecting the clarity of the contours, and I placed a black velvet flag on the subject’s left.

Next, I set up a 4×6 softbox about three meters away, positioned frontally but slightly to the right. This was used to balance the exposure on the torso and manage the transition from highlights to shadows. I added a grid to this modifier as well to retain texture in the clothing and face while minimizing unwanted light spill.

For the shadows on the subject’s left, I used a 90cm octabox positioned approximately three meters to the front-left, aiming it at a white wall to bounce the light. This provided an extremely soft fill to reveal details in the dark areas.

Finally, I placed a light equipped with barn doors behind the subject to the right, near the background. I aimed this at the backdrop to accentuate the fabric’s texture and introduce an environmental light source, thereby enhancing the three-dimensionality of the space."
