This was a setup i used for my friend Ku’i. He was going to be releasing some music. The main song for him was called, “Black Pen/Black Book.” He showed me some sample art and i listened to the song, and i wanted to show him in a dark room pouring out his soul. The shot was one with him sitting on a dinning room table. All the lighting came from camera left. Three lights were used total: 1- The Key Light was a speedlite fired through a piece of cardboard with slots cut into it. I wanted to create lines of shadows, as if light was coming through a window. 2- a 2nd speedlight with a makeshift snoot added some focused light on the hand and book. 3- and Alien Bee with a honeycomb grid acted as the rim light.
